Modena – Performance and comfort: the dual souls of Maserati, harking back to the brand’s racing roots and its iconic GranTurismo spirit. These features are now taken to a new level in terms of performance and driving pleasure in the great outdoors: Maserati presents the MC20 Cielo spyder.

Equipped with the revolutionary V6 Nettuno engine that made its debut in the 2020 MC20, MC20 Cielo offers a perfect mix of sportiness and luxury, courtesy of a specification unique to the segment: the innovative retractable glass roof
A “first of its kind” and best-in-class in terms of thermal insulation, of opening and closing speed (just 12 seconds), and of how it epitomises the best in technology.
To do so, the new model is equipped with a state-of-the-art electrochromic (smart glass) window that can instantly be transformed from clear to opaque at the touch of a button on the central screen, courtesy of Polymer-Dispersed Liquid Crystal (PDLC) technology.*

As such, MC20 Cielo provides a multi-faceted driving experience: all-encompassing with the roof closed and opaque; a unique “sky feeling” when the roof is transparent; holistic with the top down.

When a coupé is transformed into a convertible, the increase in weight is usually a major challenge. Innovative by nature, Maserati has managed to limit this and maintain the innate sporty DNA of the MC20.
MC20 Cielo weighs just 65 kg more than the coupé, made possible by meticulous, precise work during the stages of the car’s design. By limiting the increase in weight to around 60 kg, Maserati maintains the dynamic performance and driving pleasure of the coupé version in the MC20 Cielo.
The carbon fibre chassis also guarantees uncompromising torsional rigidity, offering a combination of extraordinary handling on the road and on the track.

The new model also adds a wide range of Active Safety Systems, unlike any other model ever has in this segment. As well as the parking sensors, rear-view camera and blind spot monitoring included in the MC20 since the MY22, the new spyder introduces autonomous emergency brake, traffic sign information and the Surround View 360° system, to help with parking manoeuvres using four extra cameras.

The new spyder will broaden the MC20 range and will bring Maserati into the segment of convertible sports cars. The brand intends to expand its offering to cover the convertible segment, which represents 35% of the global super sports car market.

* The central display can also be used to operate the roof at a speed of up to 50 km/h, in complete safety.

A spyder with a one-of-a-kind roof

The innovative electrically retractable glass roof
MC20 Cielo is “First of its Kind”, bold in every respect and designed for perfection, all the way to the minutest detail. The component that makes it stand out from every other spyder is the electrically retractable glass roof, the epitome of technology.
The clear glass roof, the largest in the segment, is 909 mm long, 615 mm wide and has a surface area of more than half a square metre (5,268 cm2).

MC20 Cielo is the only model in its class with a fully retractable glass roof as standard, with no impact on the car’s storage space. To operate it, all you need to do is tap a button on the central touchscreen: in just 12 seconds, the roof opens or closes, transforming this super sports car.
Another tap on another touch button and the glass changes from clear to opaque or vice versa. Advanced Polymer-Dispersed Liquid Crystal (PDLC) technology makes it possible for the change of transparency to take place in an instant; it works at virtually all temperatures, from -30°C to +85°C.
Made by Maserati in partnership with Webasto, the device also guarantees perfect heat sealing and reduced in-car noise, setting the benchmark in a segment where retractable roofs are often made of canvas or sheet metal.

As usual for Maserati, innovation is accompanied by unique and immediately recognisable styling cues.
Therefore, just as the MC20 coupé proudly sports a stylised Trident – acting as a cooling air intake for the Nettuno engine – on the polycarbonate engine compartment cover, the brand’s icon can likewise make an appearance, in the optional extra of an all-new Trident decal.
The iconic Trident decal is made of matte titanium, with a special coating consisting of a film of transparent varnish.

Design

Concept and Design
The design of the MC20 Cielo was developed at the Centro Stile Maserati in Turin.
The same goes for the new spyder, its basis the history of a brand that has elegance and racing spirit in its DNA. Maserati design is the perfect combination of sportiness and character, following timeless lines that make “Visual Longevity” (an approach that transcends fashion) its manifesto.

The project stages: dialogue between design and engineering
The work of the Centro Stile Maserati begins with a briefing on the product and its engineering. At Maserati, the briefing is debated and shaped to achieve the best possible trade-off before moving on to the practical stages, taking drawings and sketches as their starting point. The design is developed throughout the project, in continuous dialogue with the engineering departments.

MC20 Cielo is a car with an elegant yet sporty design.
Its character and personality are truly eye-catching for the purity of its forms, which seem to have been carved out by the wind, whether the roof is open or closed.

Nothing is superfluous, everything has its own function. The aim at the Centro Stile Maserati was to integrate all the demands of aerodynamics in an organic way, as if the car had evolved naturally.
The only concession to a surprise effect is the butterfly doors, which also remain in the spyder.
The butterfly door provides much easier access into and out of the cabin, as well as showing off the carbon fibre cockpit, the aerodynamics and the completely unmasked front wheel.

Maserati MC20 Cielo is a project that brings together two very different worlds. Its outfit – the bodywork – represents beauty and purity; the chassis, the carbon fibre underbody, epitomises technology and extreme performance. The upper section of the car conveys strong yet aesthetically harmonious impressions; the lower part, with its bare carbon fibre, begins with the aerodynamic floor and is rather more aggressively designed, with sharp edges and corners: everything has its own function. The front grille is the linking feature between these two worlds. It combines a bare carbon fibre lower part with a body-colour top, and its form appears to consist of two components.

The front wing lacks the three air vents that served as a signature feature of Maserati models, but would be pointless here, as the engine is mid-mounted. However, they are taken back up in the channels set into the sides of the matching cover.

Exterior

A dedicated colour: Acquamarina
For MC20 Cielo, Maserati has created a new colour: known as Acquamarina, it is available as part of the Maserati Fuoriserie customisation programme.
The concept that led the brand to select this special three-layer paint consisted of taking such a high-performance car in a more contemporary direction: holistic, high-tech and uniform in colour, all at once.

Maserati searched for a colour that would recall driving in the great outdoors, with the wind in your hair.  A fresh, luminous and light shade. An iridescent colour, in its interaction with light, revealing itself in a surprising way.

The base is a pastel grey inspired by racing, reminiscent of the MC20’s sporty DNA, accompanied by an iridescent aquamarine mica that enlivens the colour and makes it stand out.

MC20 Cielo is fitted out in a colour that not only speaks of performance, but also serves as a nod to its racing origin by bringing together the brand’s dual souls: elegance and racing.

Other than the launch hue, MC20 Cielo revisits the colour palette created for the coupé, plus Grigio Incognito (a pastel grey). The range therefore encompasses five other colours: Bianco Audace, Giallo Genio, Rosso Vincente, Blu Infinito, and Grigio Mistero.
Every one of them was developed exclusively for the MC20. All the colours were created by bringing together two aspects: a strong reference to Made in Italy, the local area and a modern reinterpretation of models and colours that have made history for the brand.

The interior of the MC20 Cielo follows the same philosophy. In the launch version, light is key, in the use of ice-coloured Alcantara and leather. Below the dashboard, the ice-coloured door panels and seats enhance the finishes and contribute to the visual lightness of the car in comparison to the standard version, which retains a black leather interior. The trident on the headrest can also be embroidered by hand as an optional extra.

As with all the models in the Maserati range, the new spyder can also be customised, making it a blank canvas for your own tastes, made possible by the Maserati Fuoriserie programme.

PrimaSerie Launch Edition
Specially and only at launch, the MC20 Cielo is also available in the PrimaSerie Launch Edition, a limited series of around 60 models featuring exclusive content.
The very name – PrimaSerie – indicates the privilege of owning an all-new model, and makes exclusivity a clear strength.

Its unique features are clear to see, all the way to the minutest detail: the exterior in the new Acquamarina colour is complemented by new MM20” wheel rims in a special version with Gold finish and laser-engraved “PrimaSerie” wording. The badges on the bodywork also come in a specific finish.

The interiors are upholstered in ice-coloured Alcantara and leather, embellished with specific contrasting stitching in aquamarine on both the dashboard and the “PrimaSerie” wording on the headrest.

New wheel rims
The new Maserati spyder adds to the MC20 range of rims a new diamond-cut alloy wheel featuring a refined design, where the key component is the double the Roman numeral that recalls the car's name and the year that marked the beginning of a “new era” for Maserati. These rims are available as an optional extra for both the coupé and the spyder.
Carbon fibre wheel rims will also be available, to ensure weight savings of 30 kg in comparison to the standard version.

Interior

The interior: the realm of functionality
Maserati MC20 Cielo conveys emotions with its elegant yet sporty line, and leaves the role of pure functionality to the interior. Everything is highly streamlined, almost minimalist, with two 10-inch screens, one for the cockpit and the other, the Maserati Touch Control Plus (MTC Plus MIA) in a central position, slanted slightly towards the driver.

The tunnel is very plain, with no unnecessary ornamentation. It includes only the drive mode selector, two buttons for the gears, the power window controls and the infotainment volume control, and a space for a smartphone with wireless charging pad. All the other controls are located on the steering wheel, with the ignition button on the left and the launch control on the right.

Although the function of every component takes priority, the interior is skilfully styled with carbon fibre to act as a meeting point for lifestyle, performance and engineering. The carbon fibre in the interior is matte in finish, for a more tailored, fabric-like look.

As seen in the MY23 coupé, the spyder has benefited from upgrades to its interior and new features: new control levers have been added behind the steering wheel, as have new buttons to turn on the lights, while the Alcantara steering wheel now comes as standard, with a blue engine start button.

Sports steering wheel in Alcantara
The steering wheel is taken from the MC20, developed and designed with input from Andrea Bertolini, Maserati Reference Driver and former World Champion in the MC12. A thicker steering wheel was chosen to maximise ergonomics and the sporty ‘feel’.

Only the essential buttons and switches remain intact, including the Start and Launch Control buttons.

The easily accessible, generously sized paddle shifters set into the steering column are available in dark aluminium in the standard configuration, or in carbon fibre as part of the carbon fibre interior package.

With MC20 Cielo, as in the MY23 coupé, the steering wheel comes in Alcantara as standard, or in carbon fibre with a blue engine start button.

Another major new feature is the electrical steering adjustment system, available as an optional extra for the MC20, starting from the new Cielo variant. Adding only 700 grams to the car's weight, this specification extends the angular movement of the steering wheel and makes its adjustment even more intuitive and precise.

A spyder devoted to performance

Three versions of the monocoque
Entirely made of carbon fibre and composite materials, the monocoque is a rush of technology and performance; ever since the outset, it has been designed for all three types of the car: coupé, spyder and, in the future, electric.

The monocoque’s architecture and geometry are the same for all three versions, but differ in the distribution of the carbon fibre and its layers, to provide monocoques with different structural characteristics for the three different types of car: the focus for the coupé will be on limited weight and high performance; the spyder demands greater torsional rigidity given the lack of a roof; the electric version will have more overall strength and enhanced protection for the battery housing.
One single design therefore encompasses three versions, with changes only made to the type, quantity and arrangement of the carbon fibre.

Refined aerodynamics
MC20 Cielo is designed as a sculpture in movement; its refined aerodynamics have been developed with the layout of the MC20 as a starting point, using both CFD simulations and experimental testing: Computational fluid dynamics and wind tunnel on a 1:1 scale.

The retractable roof has been built into the upper part of the car, with no compromise on the cleanliness of the lines, nor on the high aerodynamic efficiency of the bodywork in the coupé version.

The engine compartment air intakes have been repositioned as a result of careful optimisation using computational fluid dynamics, to avoid any adverse impact on the car’s resistance.
New boomerang-style outlets are built into the additional side fenders: the extraction of hot air from the engine compartment is maximised by exploiting the effect of the flow that passes over the fenders, while the aerodynamic efficiency of the spoiler remains unchanged.
The aerodynamically shaped B-pillar helps the air flow more cleanly over the surface, while the new rear air intakes with built-in aerodynamic deflectors optimise the direction and amount of clean air coming in via the engine intakes to cool the intercoolers.

With the roof open, the clean lines in the upper section of the car manage air flow to ensure greater comfort in the cabin: every detail has been optimised to improve efficiency, even when driving with the top down.

Special attention has also been paid to proper management of heat flows.

Its front incorporates an elaborate system of vortex generators, rendered even more effective by the distinctive hump shape of the floor. It gradually rises in the centre, in the area level with the wheels, to increase the air flow to these devices, before reconnecting to the chassis bed.

The venting channel in the area behind the front wheel starts near the point where the hump reaches its greatest extent and continues right along the side, generating a considerable vertical load in line with the front axle by expelling the air flowing from the bottom and the wheel arch.

The development of this feature, very much derived from racing, required special formation of the carbon fibre monocoque, the wheel arch and the doors, as was also the case previously for the MC12.

To conclude, the rear part of the floor of the car includes a large diffuser, with channels of different depths and optimised vertical spoilers that exploit the pressure differences between the various sections to generate vortices and energise the air flow.

Thanks to the almost obsessive care taken over the development of all these features, and the ceaseless hard work to integrate technical factors with aesthetic demands, just like its sibling coupé model, the MC20 Cielo generates a high aerodynamic load with an excellent drag, enabling it to reach top speeds over 320 km/h and continue to hug the ground in all conditions of use.

The Nettuno engine
The engine is the same revolutionary Nettuno that debuted in the coupé version. Nettuno is the result of a genuine technological revolution, protected by international patents.
A strategic operation for Maserati, a brand now preparing to launch a project “100% Made in Modena” for the MC20 and MC20 Cielo family of super sports cars, starting straight from its engine, the heart of the new car.

Nettuno has a V 90° architecture, with a 3.0-litre, 6-cylinder twin-turbo, and features a dry sump (a classic solution on super sports cars). It can deliver 630 hp at 7,500 rpm and 730 Nm of torque from 3,000 rpm.  The power-to-weight ratio is 210 hp/litre.
The compression ratio is 11:1, the stroke is 82 mm, with a bore of 88 mm.

The soul of the engine is the innovative pre-chamber combustion system featuring twin spark plugs. This technology is derived from Formula 1 and is now available for the first time on an engine destined for the road.

Technical specifications
The driver’s seat of the MC20 Cielo is as essential, functional and streamlined as in the coupé version. The focus is entirely on the driver and their quest for optimal performance.

The central tunnel is clad with carbon fibre and only includes the buttons and switches that are absolutely essential, to maintain concentration on the driving experience and to sustain the approach of elegant minimalism, the style canon for the interior.

The most luxurious detail is the drive mode selector, in a digital version here: taking centre stage, it is the distinctive feature that tells the driver and passenger they are aboard a Maserati.

New drive mode selector
The drive mode selector – positioned in the middle of the tunnel – is now a digital touch device, showing the drive mode preset by the driver, suspension calibration management and ESC Off, all on its small screen.

MC20 Cielo offers five drive modes: WET, GT, SPORT, CORSA and ESC OFF. Each one is identified by its own colour: WET is green; GT blue; SPORT red; CORSA yellow; ESC OFF orange.

Drive modes are selected by turning the selector for a few seconds. For example, the car starts in GT mode by default. To switch from GT to SPORT (to the right) or WET (to the left), it only takes half a second of movement towards the mode required. Or the driver can press the selector for 2 seconds to choose CORSA mode. Once CORSA drive mode has been selected, the touchscreen can be used to switch to ESC OFF mode.

The five modes are differentiated as follows:
GT mode (default drive mode)
GT Mode is the default drive mode when the car is started. It is ideal for everyday driving and provides maximum ease of use and comfort.

  • Engine boost: normal
  • Pedal sensitivity: normal resistance
  • Active exhaust valves: only open over 5,000 rpm
  • Gear shift setting: slow and smooth
  • Suspension: soft
  • Traction control: normal

WET Mode
WET mode offers the highest level of control on wet or damp road surfaces, to prevent skidding during acceleration or on corners.

  • Engine boost: limited
  • Pedal sensitivity: normal resistance
  • Active exhaust valves: only open over 5,000 rpm
  • Gear shift setting: slow and smooth
  • Suspension: soft
  • Traction control: all controls active

SPORT Mode
SPORT mode offers the highest performance in high-traction conditions and is ideal for use on the track.

  • Engine boost: normal
  • Pedal sensitivity: low resistance, high sensitivity
  • Active exhaust valves: open over 3,500 rpm
  • Gear shift setting: fast and direct
  • Suspension: rigid
  • Traction control: sport

CORSA Mode
CORSA mode offers the driver the most extreme experience. Traction control is much less active and stability control is active if with very high thresholds. This mode provides maximum enjoyment, but also the most challenging handling.

  • Engine boost: maximum (maximum power immediately available)
  • Pedal sensitivity: low resistance, extremely sensitive and responsive
  • Active exhaust valves: always open
  • Gear shift setting: racing
  • Suspension: racing
  • Traction control: race

In Corsa mode, the driver has the option to enable Launch Control by pressing the button on the steering wheel.

ESC OFF mode
In ESC OFF mode, all control functions are disabled. It is similar to CORSA mode, but with traction control completely disabled.

Adjustable suspension
With the new digital drive mode, the way to change the suspension settings has changed. Swiping on the display switches from drive mode to suspension settings. By turning the bezel surrounding the screen, the driver can adjust rigidity depending on the drive mode selected. In the GT and SPORT drive modes, the suspension can be set to SOFT or MID, whereas in CORSA drive mode, the settings available are MID and HARD. HARD is the most rigid setting, suitable for driving conditions on the track.

MC20 Cielo has a double-wishbone suspension system with active shock absorbers. The short spindle semi-virtual double-wishbone layout is used on both the front and rear axles. This suspension type ensures the best performance in terms of handling and ride comfort.
The semi-virtual double-wishbone assembly on the front axle guarantees the best control of the steering wheel and the highest degree of steering precision, and it cushions the vibrations transmitted from the road to the steering wheel, to guarantee better overall driver comfort.
All the components are made of forged aluminium for optimal weight savings.

Transmission
The automatic transmission is an 8-speed oil-immersed Dual Clutch design with six power and two overdrive speeds to ensure emissions compliance.

Vehicle height variator
As an optional extra, a system is available to raise the vehicle when running at low speeds, increasing ground clearance when traversing obstacles such as speed bumps or very steep inclines. The driver can activate the system by pressing the specific button on the steering wheel. When activated, the hydraulic system raises the front axle by 50 mm. The driver can then deactivate the system by pressing the button again. At this point, the car will return to the standard ground clearance.
The system works at up to 40 km/h. If the lift system is activated and the car exceeds 40 km/h, the system is deactivated automatically and the car returns to the normal height above the ground.

High Premium Sonus faber sound system
Similar to the 2021 MC20 Coupé, the new MC20 Cielo is equipped with an optional High Premium Sonus faber audio system. The MC20 Coupé system, an EISA award-winning in-vehicle audio system, has been specifically optimized to fit the unique acoustic and positioning needs of the Cielo cabin, situating the system’s 12 speakers to result in the Natural Sound that distinguishes Sonus faber audio systems.

The High Premium Sonus faber system consists of 12 speakers:

  • 2 tweeters in the door panel
  • 2 mid-range speakers in the door panel
  • 2 woofers in the door panel
  • 1 mid-range in the middle of the dashboard
  • 1 tweeter in the middle of the dashboard
  • 2 mid-ranges in the rear
  • 2 tweeters in the rear

In the new model, the cabin acoustics change considerably when the roof is opened or closed. The Sonus faber High Premium audio system recognises the MC20 Cielo configuration and automatically adapts the time-alignment, equalisation and sound levels, instinctively offering the best possible audio performance, in line with Sonus faber’s DNA and signature sound.

Sonus faber is an Italian manufacturer of handcrafted speakers, and other high-end audio equipment, the result of the idea of a man who loved music and its correct reproduction, but also from a person with a special sensibility about handcrafted wood products and a true reverence for beauty. The Sonus faber brand tells a story by means of sound and materials Each Sonus faber product, be it past, present or future, is able to take the listener into a world of long-lasting tradition, Italian culture and craftsmanship. Our handmade musical instruments are true to Italian expertise, with an unforgettable voice that immerses you in a natural sound experience.

Maserati Intelligent Assistant (MIA) Multimedia System
MC20 Cielo is equipped with the latest Maserati Intelligent Assistant (MIA) multimedia system. The heart of MIA is the powerful Android Automotive operating system, which offers an innovative, high-performance User Experience, fully customisable to the driver’s preferences.

MIA has two in-car screens: the digital cluster and central display, which are similar in shape and size. Neither too large nor too small, they are perfectly suited to the functional cabin interior of the MC20 Cielo; they facilitate driving comfort by not requiring the driver to refocus when going from one screen to the other.
The 10.25-inch cluster is fully digital, with a Thin Film Transistor (TFT) display.

The central display, again 10.25-inch, has an HD resolution and touchscreen functions typical of personal smart devices. The screen has a special anti-reflective coating to ensure maximum visibility even in direct sunlight.
When the devices are switched off, they have a total black effect, made possible by an innovative optical solution.
The controls to open, close and change the transparency of the roof appear on the central screen.

Affalterbach.  AMG - for 55 years now, these three letters have stood for top automotive performance, exclusivity and high driving dynamics worldwide. The G‑Class has enjoyed a unique position in the AMG portfolio for over two decades and is thus our king of off-road performance. Its cult status makes it the ideal ambassador to ring in the 55th anniversary of the sports car and performance brand - with the special edition Mercedes‑AMG G 63 "Edition 55" (WLTP: combined fuel consumption 16.0 l/100 km, combined CO2 emissions 363 g/km)[1]. Particularly exquisite equipment details underline Mercedes‑AMG's claim to offer customers the highest possible individuality and exclusivity. The anniversary model can be ordered now until October 2022. More birthday surprises will follow in the coming months.

"From a two-man start-up in 1967 to a state-of-the-art development site including its own engine manufacturing facility for high-performance vehicles and more than 2000 excellently qualified employees in 2022 - the success story of Mercedes‑AMG over the past 55 years is simply impressive. The same applies to the G‑Class, which has remained true to itself for over four decades in the course of its unique career. Its long history and still genuine character makes it the perfect first well-wisher for me on our 55th birthday. And just as the G‑Class will lose nothing of its original character in its future all-electric variant, Mercedes‑AMG is also ensuring the hallmark driving performance made in Affalterbach in its electrified future. The departure into the next 55 years of the company's history will certainly be as exciting and challenging as the task our company founders Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher set themselves back then," says Philipp Schiemer, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes‑AMG GmbH.

The Mercedes‑AMG G 63 "Edition 55" is available in obsidian black metallic or G manufaktur opalite white bright paint. The colours on both sides of the vehicle are coordinated with the AMG emblem and the suggested AMG rhombus. Exciting contrasts are provided by the 22‑inch AMG forged wheels in a cross-spoke design with a matt tantalum grey paint finish and a high-sheen rim flange, as well as the AMG Night Package and the AMG Night package II. The fuel filler cap in silver chrome with AMG lettering also bears witness to great attention to detail.

55 years of the Mercedes-AMG success story

Founded in 1967 by engineers Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher, the company has continued to build on its position as a highly successful performance and sports car brand through numerous successes in motorsport and the development of unique road cars. Today the Affalterbach-based company is a wholly owned subsidiary of Mercedes‑Benz Group AG and is the Group's sporting spearhead. For each of the now more than 2000 employees the focus is on the brand promise "Driving Performance", which unites the core strengths of AMG: cutting-edge technology and a passion for dynamic, emotively appealing products.

The current Mercedes‑AMG portfolio comprises more than 50 vehicles with a power range from 225 kW (306 hp) to 620 kW (843 hp) of system power in the first performance hybrid from Affalterbach, the Mercedes‑AMG GT 63 S E PERFORMANCE (WLTP: Fuel consumption weighted, combined 7.9 l/100 km; CO2 emissions weighted, combined 180 g/km; Power consumption weighted, combined 12.0 kWh/100 km)[3]. The selection ranges from performance vehicles in various body styles to completely independently developed sports cars such as the Mercedes‑AMG GT 4‑Door model and the new Mercedes‑AMG SL. The range of powertrains has also been continuously developed in line with market requirements and customer wishes and currently offers efficiency-optimised combustion engines with four, six or eight cylinders. In addition, Mercerdes‑AMG is consistently pursuing the path of the Future of Driving Performance: under the label E PERFORMANCE, performance hybrids are offered with an independent drive layout and technology from Formula 1. The portfolio also includes all-electric AMG derivatives based on the Group's own EVA2 platform. In the near future, completely independent battery-electric AMG models will also follow, which will be based on the new electrical architecture (AMG.EA) which has been developed completely in-house.

With 145,979 vehicles delivered in 2021 and growth of 16.7 percent, Mercedes‑AMG has started the anniversary year with a record figure.

Over two decades of the high-performance G‑Class

The first production model of an AMG variant of the G‑Class was launched in 1999 to mark the 20th anniversary of the off-road legend. The G 55 AMG marked the beginning of a new, highly successful chapter in G‑Class history. The 5.5‑litre naturally aspirated eight‑cylinder engine with three‑valve technology and dual ignition produced 260 kW (354 hp) and had a maximum torque of 525 Nm at 3000 rpm. In 2002, the G 63 AMG set new standards. It was the first time a twelve-cylinder engine had been used in the G‑Class. The 6.3‑litre naturally aspirated V12 engine produced 326 kW (444 hp) of power and a sumptuous 620 Nm of maximum torque. The most powerful G‑Class at the time was custom-built at the AMG Manufaktur in Affalterbach at the exclusive request of the customer. This was followed in 2004 by the G 55 AMG with a V8 supercharged engine, an even more powerful high-performance model with 350 kW (476 hp). Another highlight in 2012 was the premiere of the G 65 AMG. Its 450 kW (612 hp) V12 engine achieved 1000 Nm of torque.

The current Mercedes‑AMG G 63 consistently continues the success story. Its unique position among performance SUVs is underpinned by the powerful drive, the AMG RIDE CONTROL suspension, the AMG-specific driving programs and the luxurious interior. The AMG 4.0‑litre V8 biturbo engine with 430 kW (585 hp) and 850 Nm maximum torque, a 40:60 ratio all-wheel drive with three differential locks, the extremely fast-shifting nine-speed automatic transmission, the double-wishbone independent front suspension and the adaptive adjustable damping form the basis for the driving performance characteristic of AMG on and off surfaced roads.

Thrills are just around the corner with Toyota’s all-new 2022 GR 86. For the next-generation coupe, the same fanatics behind Toyota Gazoo Racing’s championship racecars looked to engineer even greater curve-hugging precision, with a focus on added stability, power and improved aerodynamics. The result? A track-ready, driver’s car made for pure fun.

How’d they do it? To start, the GR team built upon the nimble attributes of the current generation 86 chassis by adding strategically placed high-strength steel, new cross members up front and a full-ring frame in the rear. Then, they engineered nearly 18% more horsepower and 11% more torque by utilizing a larger, naturally aspirated 2.4-liter, horizontally opposed four-cylinder engine. They tuned it so the peak torque arrives far earlier in the powerband at 3700 RPM, versus 6600 RPM on the previous generation, making for a responsive and powerful driving experience – especially when coming out of the curves and onto the straightaways. It’s available in a manual transmission (MT) or paddle-shifted automatic (AT), so drivers can choose an experience that fits their style.

GR engineers knew that keeping a low center of gravity and svelte curb weight was vital for maximum fun. Constructed with a weight-saving aluminum roof and front fenders, the GR 86 base grade weighs in at only 2,811 pounds for the MT (2,851 pounds in the AT), making it among the lightest sports cars on the market. The combination of 53:47 front:rear balance, a low-slung 51.6-inch overall height and a compact flat-four engine gives GR 86 all the right ingredients for firmly planted sports car handling.

GR 86 comes in seven exterior color choices, Track bRED, Halo White, Steel Silver, Pavement Grey, Raven Black and Neptune or Trueno Blue. With 2+2 seating for everyday functionality and a fold-flat rear seat for extra space, it’s available in two grades: GR 86 and GR 86 Premium.

The Premium grade features a large duckbill spoiler, black 18-inch aluminum alloy wheels, perforated Alcantara and leather-trimmed, dual-mode heated front seating and an eight-speaker multimedia audio system. The GR 86 base model sits on 17-inch wheels and comes with black G-embossed fabric seats and a six-speaker multimedia audio system. An available 200W subwoofer adds bass to the sound system on either grade.

Power & Design for a New Generation

The Toyota Gazoo Racing (TGR) team spent late nights in the garage under flickering fluorescent lights to enhance performance on the new GR 86.

With the move from a 2.0L to 2.4L flat-four engine, the 2022 GR 86 increases its engine bore diameter to 94mm (previously 86mm) for nearly 20% more displacement, bumping up from 1,998cc to 2,387cc. The bigger engine improved zero-to-60 times from 7.0 to 6.1 seconds for the MT and from 8.0 to 6.6 seconds for the AT; manufacturer estimated fuel economy is 19 city/26 highway/21 combined MPG (6-Speed M/T) and 20 city/30 highway/24 combined (6-Speed A/T).

Toyota’s D-4S dual injection technology is re-tuned to deliver more aggressive throttle input. This system combines direct fuel injection and port-injection technologies. The direct-injection system provides a cooling effect in the cylinders, which allows the engine to use a very high 12.5:1 compression ratio for maximum power. The port fuel injectors come into play during light- and medium-load conditions to help maximize combustion efficiency.

The intake manifold’s port diameter and length have been optimized to support linear torque and acceleration and the air intake has also been redesigned to maximize airflow. The fuel system has a new pump design and wider transfer tube for a steady fuel flow during cornering. The cooling system gets a new high-speed water pump, five-level water-cooled oil cooler and a new high-capacity 200W radiator output motor. And the exhaust’s larger 5.6L center pipe capacity delivers a satisfying growl, with an Active Sound Control system that augments engine sound in the cabin.

Highly Rigid Body Structure

The GR team also reworked the chassis and body to complement GR 86’s increase in power.

Up front, diagonal cross members were added to the joints between the front suspension and frame, improving load transmission input from the front tires and reducing lateral bending. The hood has an internal diagonal frame structure for stability, modified from a honeycomb design on the prior generation. High-strength fasteners connect the frame and suspension mounts. Additional rigidity is added to the rear thanks to a new full-ring structure that completely ties the upper and lower chassis together. High-strength fasteners connect the rear frame and suspension mounts to handle the g-forces in corners.

The materials used in the chassis were also carefully selected to optimize handling. Crafted from a combination of high-strength steel, hot-stamped steel and aluminum, each material is strategically placed in the frame to bring drivers a balance of roll and pitch that maximizes control. For additional reinforcement, structural adhesive throughout the underbody creates a taut, connected frame.

Driven by Control

GR 86’s three-spoked, leather-wrapped steering wheel puts drivers in direct control of its agile handling. With a 13.5 overall ratio that requires just 2.5 turns clock to clock for tight maneuverability, it features a new Electronic Power Steering (EPS) system with a column-mounted integrated motor and control unit that reduces both weight and space. GR engineers even changed the steering gear box mount, making it more rigid with a hard rubber bushing and reshaped mounting bolt washer.

Sport-tuned independent MacPherson® front struts feature refined damping performance and gain new rebound springs to enhance handling characteristics. A double-wishbone style, multi-link rear suspension features a Torsen® limited-slip rear differential for improved traction while cornering. To complement GR 86’s increased torque, the rear axle offers additional reinforcement, and the strut stabilizer bar is now connected directly to the subframe for maximum stability. Sport-tuned rear shock absorbers feature stiffer springs to provide planted, predictable handling for the front-engine, rear-wheel drive coupe.

The GR 86 base grade sits on 17-inch, V-shaped machined-finish 10-spoke aluminum alloy wheels, wrapped in Michelin® Primacy HP® tires. The GR 86 Premium comes with 18-inch 10-spoke black aluminum alloy wheels that feature a Japanese-sword-inspired look and Michelin Pilot Sport 4® tires. The 18-inch wheels have truss cross-sectional spokes for structural rigidity and minimally fringed nut holes that create a compact hub. Braking comes from power-assisted 11.6-inch front and 11.4-inch rear ventilated disc brakes.

Manual or Automatic – You Choose

Sports car purists will love GR 86’s six-speed manual transmission. With the push of a button, MT drivers can engage Track mode or switch off Vehicle Stability Control (VSC). The shape of the shift lever is optimized for smooth, enjoyable shifting, whether you’re moving from 2nd to 3rd or downshifting from 5th to 4th. Additionally, a carbon synchronizer was added to improve shifting into 4th gear. The MT uses new low-viscosity oil and bearings for smooth shifting operability with the higher torque output of the 2.4L boxer engine.

For the Automatic Transmission (AT), steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters offer enthusiasts a dynamic driving experience. Drivers can choose between Normal, Sport, Snow or Track modes. When in Sport mode, the AT senses brake and accelerator operation and vehicle behavior to automatically shift into the optimal gear, bringing drivers the control they want. Additional clutch discs and a new high-capacity torque converter allow for smooth delivery of the engine’s added power.

Purist Sports Car Design, Track Ready Aerodynamics

First introduced in 2012, the first-generation 86 was a tribute to the fun-to-drive, AE-86 Corollas of the 1980s. The new GR 86 keeps that spirit alive with its focus on sporty design and weight management.

Parabola-shaped transparent lens components give its LED headlights a fearless look, with the same sweeping, internal L-shape as the GR Supra. A GR sports car exclusive G-mesh-shaped matrix grille feeds air to the intake, and functional molding on the front bumper features a textured shark skin-inspired design to reduce drag.

On the side, its front fender and large rocker molding form side sill spoilers with integrated air outlets, improving aerodynamics at the door drop. The air outlets allow air inside the front wheel arch to escape, reducing wheel well turbulence and supporting stability. Along the doorline, a low, horizontally aligned underbody combines with the accentuated fender tops to express a strong front-rear posture. Black side mirrors add contrast and are slightly larger than the previous generation, with a curved shape to maximize airflow.

At the rear, inverted wheel arches express a wide stance and arch fins control air flow. Aerodynamic fins have been added to the lower rear bumper for further stability. On the Premium Grade A large, duckbill spoiler sweeps up from the rear deck for increased downforce. The license plate holder has been dropped down to the rear bumper, simplifying the trunk opening and contributing to its low center of gravity. Three-dimensional rear taillights wrap around the rear deck and blend into trim molding along the trunk line to form a wide, connected rear.

GR engineers also stretched their creativity in seeking weight savings on the GR 86. The front fenders and roof panel are now constructed of aluminum, in addition to an already-aluminum hood. Other examples of weight-shaving ingenuity come from the use of structural adhesives in the underbody, a resin fuel door, new light-weight front seat frames, the redesigned EPS and changes to the driveline and engine block.

Driver-Focused Cockpit

GR 86 features Toyota’s Smart Key System that functions on both the driver and passenger door. Once inside, drivers will find a horizontally configured instrument panel for a clean field of view. A push-button start fires up a GR 86-logo animation on its 7-inch Thin Film Transistor (TFT) multi-information display. Display content varies based on whether drivers are in Normal, Sport, Snow or Track mode (MT offers Track mode only). Sport Mode throws a red ring around the speedometer for an aggressive look. Track Mode was developed with race driver input and prominently displays an RPM-band in the center, oil and water coolant temperatures and lap timer.

The HVAC system has added independent left/right temperature adjustments, and new, large LED dials and piano-key switches are arranged on the center console for easy operation. A leather-wrapped steering wheel has integrated controls for the audio system, hands-free calling, voice-recognition system, display meters and cruise control; AT adds an ACC display option button. The Premium Grade gains aluminum sport pedals and footrest. Power windows come with auto up/down and pinch protection.

The Premium Grade’s six-way adjustable black and silver accented front seats feature two-level heating and come upholstered in perforated Alcantara with leather side bolsters. Black and silver accents continue through to the steering wheel, shift boot and hand brake. The base grade has six-way adjustable black G-embossed fabric with sport fabric side bolsters. Rear seats are covered with Alcantara on the Premium and sport fabric on the base grade.

A split opening center console provides two cup holders or storage as needed, with one auxiliary audio and two USB connections inside. The AT version has an open storage area in the center as well. Door armrests have a long pull-handle with easy access to in-door storage space.

An 8-inch touchscreen multimedia system with a six-speaker audio system comes on the base grade; that increases to an eight-speaker system on the Premium. The eight-speaker system now adds a powerful mode to the equalizer function for an acoustic effect that emphasizes low and high tones. For those who want even more rumble, a dealer or factory-installed 10-inch, 200W subwoofer is available for either grade. Either system comes complete with Wired Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ compatibility, Bluetooth® for hands-free phone capability, a SiriusXM® 3-month Platinum Plan trial and a trial access to a suite of available connected services (with additional subscription).

15 July 2021, Gaydon, Warwickshire: Aston Martin’s transformational journey takes a huge step forwards with the Valhalla concept car brought to production reality as an extraordinary, truly driver-focused mid-engined hybrid supercar.

Led by Aston Martin’s CEO, Tobias Moers, Valhalla is the latest and most significant product of the brand’s Project Horizon strategy to-date; a car which will broaden the model portfolio to reflect Aston Martin’s presence in Formula One®, set best-in-class standards for performance, dynamics and driving pleasure, and drive the transition from internal combustion to hybrid to full electric powertrains.

Aston Martin’s Executive Chairman, Lawrence Stroll said: “Aston Martin’s first series production mid-engined supercar, Valhalla is a truly transformational moment for this ultra-luxury brand. The launch of Valhalla demonstrates Aston Martin’s commitment to building a range of exceptional mid-engined driver focused cars, a crucial next stage in the expansion of our product line-up. It also seemed fitting to unveil this stunning track biased supercar at the home of motorsport and the home of the Aston Martin Cognizant Formula OneTM Team and marks Aston Martin’s return to the British Grand Prix for the first time in over 60 years, a true milestone.”

Built with chassis, aerodynamic and electronics expertise forged in Formula One®, and a cutting-edge hybrid powertrain technology at its heart, Valhalla is a formidable technological showcase. Yet far from engineering the driver out of the loop, Valhalla’s sole focus is immersing them in a new kind of supercar driving experience. One which brings unprecedented excitement, enjoyment, and driver engagement to the top of the supercar sector.

With pinpoint handling, prodigious levels of downforce and a breathtaking blend of instant battery-electric torque and the intensity of a scintillating V8 engine, Valhalla’s fusion of raw emotion and hybrid efficiency reflects a new era. One defined by a shift in attitudes and expectations that demands contemporary supercars are not just sensational to look at and thrilling to drive, but that they truly reflect the technology employed in the highest level of motorsport. As such Valhalla is at the forefront; an authentic, next generation Aston Martin road racer, designed around the driver, for the driver and built to be enjoyed.

Valhalla heralds a new definition of Aston Martin. With a mid-engined 950bhp gasoline/battery electric powertrain, new carbon fibre structure and aerodynamics shaped by the pioneering philosophy first seen in the revolutionary Aston Martin Valkyrie, Valhalla will bring the perfect balance of hypercar performance and advanced powertrain, driving dynamics and uniquely sophisticated design materials to truly redefine the supercar sector.

For a true engineer like Moers, Valhalla marks the moment where Aston Martin delivers on earlier promises, he says: “Preserving the essence of an exceptional concept car is vital when meeting the challenge of bringing it into production. With Valhalla not only have we stayed true to our commitment to build a world-beating supercar, but we have exceeded our original aims. The result is a pure driving machine - one which exists right at the cutting edge of performance and technology yet allows the driver to feel the emotion and thrill of complete connection and control.”

At the beating heart of Valhalla is its all-new PHEV powertrain, which features three motors; foremost of these is a rear-mid-mounted 4.0 litre twin-turbo bespoke V8 engine. The most advanced, responsive and highest performing V8 engine ever fitted to an Aston Martin, it features a flat-plane crankshaft for increased responsiveness. Revving to 7200rpm and developing 750PS, it sends drive exclusively to the rear axle. Exhaling through a lightweight exhaust system with active flaps for an adjustable and authentic Aston Martin sound character it also features top-exit tailpipes to maximise visual and aural drama.

Supplementing this new V8 engine is a 150kW/400V battery hybrid system utilising a pair of E-Motors; one mounted on the front axle and the other on the rear axle. The electric system contributes a further 204PS for a headline combined power output of 950PS. When driven in EV mode battery power is directed exclusively to the front axle. In other driving modes battery power is split between front and rear axles, the percentage sent to each axle constantly varies according to driving demands. In certain situations, 100% of battery power can be sent to the rear axle, supplementing the full force of the ICE V8 for maximum performance.

Completing the powertrain is an all-new 8-speed DCT transmission. Exclusively designed and built for Aston Martin, this new paddle-shift gearbox has been developed specifically for the hybrid era. Featuring e-reverse (which utilises the PHEV’s electric motors and thereby saves weight by negating the need for a conventional reverse gear) the transmission also features an Electronic Limited-Slip Differential (E-Diff) on the rear axle for maximum traction and handling agility.

Electrical power is also used to enhance low speed control and response as well as provide reversing capability. And, thanks to the instantaneous torque from the E-Motors, the hybrid system augments the V8 engine to deliver sensational standing start acceleration and in-gear response. Outright performance is further aided by the E-Motor and V8 ICE being able to run different gears in the DCT simultaneously, which enables a maximum torque delivery of 1000Nm.

Running in EV-only mode, Valhalla will be capable of a maximum 80mph / 130km/h and has a zero-emission range of 15km. Predicted CO2 (WLTP) is less than 200g/km. Unleashing all 950PS the Valhalla will reach a top speed of 217mph / 330km/h and will complete the sprint from 0-62mph in just 2.5 seconds. In terms of outright track capability, a stunning 6:30 Nürburgring Nordschleife lap time is being targeted.

Ralph Illenberger, Head of Powertrain Engineering said: “Valhalla is our first opportunity to really show what we are capable of in a true production sense. We have created our own bespoke air-to-air charge-cooled, flat-plane crank V8 engine and have combined it with a powerful hybrid system. And, of course, we also have our own bespoke Dual Clutch Transmission - a first for Aston Martin and an essential component both for Valhalla and future Aston Martin models. The result is a truly world-class powertrain for an efficient, ultra-performing supercar.”

In terms of its structure, Valhalla is built around a new a carbon fibre tub for maximum stiffness with minimum weight penalty. Featuring Formula One® style push rod front suspension complete with inboard mounted springs and dampers reducing unsprung mass and provides a brilliant packaging solution. Together with the rear-end’s multilink design, Valhalla uses Multimatic Variable Spring rate and Adaptive Spool Valve (ASV) Damper units providing adjustable ride frequency for exceptional performance on road and track. In addition to stiffer suspension, Track mode sees ride height dramatically reduced in order to maximise downforce. At the other end of the speed scale, a front axle lift system raises the nose for improved approach angle on awkward inclines.

The carbon tub’s inherent rigidity means suspension loadings can be controlled with absolute precision and every minute input to the electric power-assisted steering faithfully translated into an immediate and intuitive direction change. High performance Carbon Ceramic Matrix brakes (complete with brake-by-wire technology) guarantee exceptional stopping power, and bespoke Michelin tyres (20in front, 21in rear) developed specifically for Valhalla provide a final and all-important layer of excellence. This intimate, uncorrupted connection between driver and car sits at the core of the Valhalla experience, with advanced materials and electronics serving only to enhance the driver’s enjoyment, confidence and sense of complete control.

With a target dry weight of less than 1550kg Valhalla will have an unrivalled power-to-weight ratio compared to its class rivals. Weight of a different kind - that generated by aerodynamic downforce - also plays its part in Valhalla’s unmatched dynamic capabilities. Benefitting from a flow-down of the Aston Martin Valkyrie hypercar’s Formula One® inspired aerodynamic philosophy, Valhalla employs a combination of active aerodynamic surfaces - specifically the front surfaces and rear wing - and masterful management of underbody airflow through dramatic venturi tunnels. At 150mph Valhalla’s meticulously sculpted aerodynamic surfaces generate an impressive 600kg of downforce, enough for mighty high-speed cornering ability and unshakable stability.

The pursuit of downforce demands uncompromising functionality, but expertly working the airflow beneath the car has left Aston Martin’s design team with a clean upper body surface with which they have created a memorable mid-engined shape that is original yet unmistakably Aston Martin. Uncorrupted by the need for aggressive wings that jut into the airstream, Valhalla’s predominantly carbon fibre body blends function and beauty in a manner that befits a new generation of mid-engined supercar. Spectacular forward-hinged dihedral doors bring drama to the beginning and end of every journey, while cut-outs in the roof ease ingress and egress. A distinctive roof scoop feeds air directly into the V8 engine’s intakes, with additional side and rear intakes and vents integrated smoothly into the overall body design.

Valhalla, the luxury brands first series production mid-engined supercar will be available in both left-hand and right-hand drive, expanding its appeal across international markets. Cockpit room has been increased compared to the Aston Martin Valkyrie, though many Formula One® inspired hallmarks remain, such as a pared back cockpit design with clear, simple ergonomics unashamedly focussed around the driver. An innovative new Aston Martin HMI system features a central touchscreen display and incorporates Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Adjustable pedals and steering column enable the seat bases to be fixed to the chassis structure. The footwells are also raised for a low hip-to-heel seating position redolent of a Formula One® car.

For Aston Martin’s Chief Creative Officer, Marek Reichman, Valhalla is an opportunity for the Aston Martin design team to express extreme performance with fresh form and proportion, and to capture the brand’s bold future-forward approach: “When we created the Valhalla concept we were keen to emphasise the design legacy of the Aston Martin Valkyrie and that intent remains unchanged, but the execution has evolved considerably in order to reach production of this all-new car. Though the legacy of Valkyrie is clear, Valhalla is now a more mature, fully resolved piece of design. One which combines the pure aerodynamic function you would expect from a marque competing in Formula One® together with the beautiful form, striking proportions and exemplary detailing for which Aston Martin is renowned.”

Full LED Matrix headlights with adaptive functionality and high-beam assist deliver excellent forward vision in the dark, and Dual Zone Air Conditioning provides high level of occupant comfort. In order to comply with the latest regulatory requirements, Valhalla also incorporates the latest Advanced Driver Assistance Systems. These include Auto Emergency Braking, Forward Collision Warning, Active Cruise Control, Blind Spot Monitoring and Rear View Parking Camera (with Surround View option).

Dynamic development of the Valhalla will be the task of Aston Martin’s award-winning dynamics team and complemented with an enviable pool of talent which also includes Aston Martin Cognizant Formula OneTM Team drivers Sebastian Vettel, Lance Stroll and Nico Hulkenburg. They will give their invaluable perspective to the project and bring added authenticity to a car which boasts such a clear connection to Aston Martin’s Grand Prix machines.

Valhalla is a new generation Aston Martin, it defines a new driver and driving experience – ‘the Mastery of Driving’, a true ultra-luxury, exclusive, British supercar.
